The Vegvisir Race Nyborg 2025 got off to a brilliant start with a packed keynote talk by TV2 meteorologist Jacob Mouritzen, who delivered valuable insights under the headline “Understand the Weather”.

Held less that 24 hours before the first race start, the talk served as the premiere event in the new “Sailing & Socializing” format, aimed at creating a stronger community feeling before the serious racing begins.

What the sailors learned:

Jacob Mouritzen’s presentation focused on what every skipper needs: how to choose the right weather apps and understand what drives their forecasts.

Key Takeaways from the Talk:

  • Most weather apps pull from different global models (GFS, ECMWF, ICON, etc.), but not all data is created equal.

  • Resolution matters: Some models are very general and suited for ocean crossings, while others offer higher-resolution forecasts more suitable for coastal and fjord sailing.

  • Local knowledge wins: For sailors competing in Danish waters, MeteoData.dk and FCOO.dk stand out as the most reliable platforms.

    • MeteoData.dk offers excellent wind forecasts tailored for Danish conditions.

    • FCOO.dk provides good short term wind prediction and most importantly accurate and up-to-date current predictions, especially useful in the narrow and current-filled waters around Nyborg.

  • ree
    • FCOO/Sejladsudsigt is a localized app the offers good short term forcast an unique data of the current.

His engaging and practical approach helped sailors make sense of the overwhelming volume of forecasts—and how to translate them into smart decisions on the water.

Sailing, Talking—and Supporting the Next Generation

The evening also marked the first-ever pre-race “Sailing & Socializing” gathering, co-organized by Nyborg Sejlforening. The club served up traditional Skipperlabskovs along with wine, water, and local beer—all sold in support of the youth section of the sailing club.

It was a resounding success: a full house, smiling faces, and conversations flowing across tables between rookies and veterans alike. A strong reminder that Vegvisir Race is not just about competition—but about community, knowledge-sharing, and coastal culture.
