Day 1 Highlights: Spectacular Starts, Fair Winds and Local Support

ree

Vegvisir Race Nyborg 2025 is officially underway! Thursday marked a powerful start to the 8th edition of one of Northern Europe’s most challenging and atmospheric shorthanded sailing events.

Mayor of Nyborg, Kenneth Muhs, opened the event by warmly welcoming sailors and highlighting how sailing and maritime events like Vegvisir Race are not only close to the heart of the town but also play an important role in supporting local business and tourism.

At the skipper’s meeting, sailors gained key insights from Dorthe Olbæk Hansen of the Great Belt Vessel Traffic Service. Her sharp presentation on navigating one of Denmark’s busiest shipping lanes reminded everyone of the unique tactical and safety challenges that define Vegvisir Race.

Meteorologist Jacob Mouritzen followed with an engaging weather briefing, providing valuable knowledge on how to interpret wind data and spot critical changes using different forecast models — a vital skill when sailing through the complex currents and shifting winds of the Danish archipelago.

The racing kicked off with spot-on starts, expertly managed by Nyborg Sejlforening’s race officers. Spectators lined the harbour mole to cheer on the fleet as they passed the two Pantaenius Fly By marks, located impressively close to the pier. Among the crowd was a delegation of invited guests from Nyborg’s business community, experiencing the unique atmosphere of offshore sailing from an up-close vantage point.

By 22:30, most of the fleet was sailing closely together northwest of Romsø, setting the tone for a competitive and beautiful night at sea. A good race is already underway — and it’s just the beginning.
