The Sailing & Socializing Concept is Back - Stronger than Ever - in 2025

One of the original concepts of Vegvisir Race will return in an even stronger format in 2025. This means that the Afterparty and Afterparty Dinner is back as a part of the registration fee. This ensures everyone has the chance to share the experiences of the past days with family, friends, and competitors.

– Vegvisir Race is more than just an international sailing competition – it's an intense experience of nature, of sea and the of the demanding challenges in combination with cultural moments ashore. These experiences deserve to be shared with other passionate sailors, frinds and families, says Morten Brandt Rasmussen from Shorthand ECM. He says further that Wedness evening will be included as a part of the Sailing & Socializing concept as a significant Keynote Speaker will appear on stage in the Meeting Point tent to will inspire spectators and the participants before the racing starts Thursday.

Vegvisir Race stays in Nyborg

Nyborg Municipality, Nyborg Sailing Club, and Shorthand ECM have signed a three-year agreement ensuring that Nyborg will remain the start and finish city for the international double- and singlehanded event. The aim is for Vegvisir Race to maintain its position as one of the largest, most challenging, and most adventurous distance sailing races in Europe.

From 2025, Vegvisir Race will reduce from three to two courses to create larger fleets and more intense competition.

– We are doing this partly based on the feedback we’ve received from participants – it is simply more challenging and more fun to compete in larger fleets and against more competitors, says Morten Brandt Rasmussen of Shorthand ECM, which owns and organizes Vegvisir Race in collaboration with Nyborg Sailing Club and Nyborg Municipality.

Training in good seamanship

At its core, Vegvisir Race always combines inshore and offshore elements. The ability to adapt your boat and mindset to constantly changing conditions is a key skill for a true Vegvisir Racer and for good seamanship in the broadest sense. Another part of the Vegvisir DNA is that the courses are new every year.

This year is no exception, with two courses measuring 184 nautical miles and 94 nautical miles, respectively. The long course starts on Thursday, September 4, while the short course starts on Friday, September 5. For the first time ever, a Vegvisir Race course will pass close to Samsø and the narrow, challenging waters between Skanse, Lindholm, and Kyholm. If you haven’t sailed there before, you’re in for a treat.

– It is an incredibly beautiful area to sail through. It almost feels like stepping into a time capsule, back to the Ice Age, says Morten Brandt Rasmussen, who scouted the area this summer.

Introducing perpetual trophies

After Samsø, the route continues around Sejrø, south under the Great Belt Bridge, past Agersø, into Smålandsfarvandet by Femø, Fejø, and Vejrø, before returning to the finish line in Nyborg.

Starting in 2025, perpetual trophies will be introduced for the fastest doublehanded sailors on this course. The trophies will be awarded to the sailors completing the course with the highest average speed, calculated based on the course’s theoretical distance. If the records are broken in 2026, the trophies will pass on to the new record holders.

The world’s longest up/down course?

At first glance, the 94-nautical-mile course might resemble the world’s longest up/down course. However, on closer inspection, this course is packed with Vegvisir Race DNA. The route heads south through Rudkøbing Channel, past Strynø and Ærø, through the narrow passage at Marstal, directly out into the Baltic Sea. It then goes south of Langeland, past Sprogø, under the high bridge, around a mark, and back under the low bridge before finishing in Nyborg.

eSailing returns

Last year’s eSailing event attracted many participants, including more than 220 schoolchildren from Nyborg Municipality, and was a big hit. In 2025, the collaboration with Play eSailing will be strengthened, giving even more people the chance to try virtual sailing during the event and sparking interest in real-life sailing.
