Sailing Guidelines Vegvisir Race 2022 

Any changes to these Sailing Guidelines will be published on the Notice Board online.

1. RULES 

The race is governed by IMO’s International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) the Vegvisir Race Statutes. Traffic separations have to be respected in accordance with Rule 10 in COLREGS. Breach of the rules and regulations can lead to disqualification of the participant. The participants must pay special attention to commercial traffic, leisure sailors as well as to the other participants of the race.  

These Sailing Guidlines and Vegvisir Race Statutes are available in English only.  

 

2. NAVIGATION LIGHTS 

All participating boats must be equipped with fixed statutory navigation lights in accordance with COLREGS rule 25 (a) and 25 (b). This also applies for boats under 7 meters LOA. 
 

2.2 USE OF ENGINE 

Engines and other machines like generators can be run until the start signal (4 minutes before the actual start). It’s allowed to run the engine to charge the batteries of the boat during the race. 

It’s allowed to use the engine to run the boat off the ground once but it comes with a time penalty of 20 minutes that will be added to the sailing time. If the engine is used to get the boat off the ground the incident must be must be reported to the Race Office on the phone number +45 2360 1667 as soon as possible after the incident and no later than 2 hours. 

The engine may be run to help a person or another vessel in danger or distress. The incident must be reported as soon as the situation allows it. Contact the race committee on +45 2360 1667. The race committee will decide how much time can be subtracted from the overall sailing time. 

It is permitted to row, paddle or swim to propel your boat forward by the means of oars, paddles or hand paddles and finns by the power from the human body. 

 

3. REJECTION 

The Race Committee has the right to reject a vessel or a skipper unfit for the race. 

4. MESSAGES 

Messages for the participants concerning the race will posted on the Notice Board online only. 

5. THE COURSES 2023

THE SAILING DIRECTION will be EITHER clockwise OR counterclockwise

The sailing direction will be announced at the skipper meetings. Changes to the course due to extreme weather will be announced at the skipper meeting and posted on the Official Notice Board online and at the Race Bureau.  (See a graphic presentation of the courses HERE)

5.1 Single-handed and double-handed 78 nautical miles  

Green Flag Clockwise:

5.4 START LINE AND START SEQUENCE WAITING ZONE - APPLIES FOR ALL STARTS 

The starting area is on Nyborg Fjord approx. 1 nautical mile south east of the entry of the port of Nyborg. The startline is established between a cubic yellow race mark and a yellow flag buoy next to the race committee boat. After the start the boats will head north west to round the two yellow race marks; the Pantaenius Fly By gate.

A line parallel to the starting line established between two blue flag buoys south east of the starting line separates the starting zone from the waiting zone. Only boats in the present start are allowed in the starting zone.  

 

5.5 FINISH LINE 

The finishing line is established between two yellow cubic race  marks. When crossing the line the participating boat receives a sound signal. The participant’s start number must be held up in the air so the number is readable to the officials ashore on port side. See appendix 

 

6. Dock out  

As all starts are involving a short leg that takes the participants from Nyborg Fjord back towards the town and very close to the entrance of the harbor it is of great importance that NO boats sail TO the starting area during the starts. Therefore, the following dock out guidelines must be followed. If not followed a time penalty of 15 minutes can be applied to any participant who do not comply.  

 

6.1 Dock out 2Star 238 Thursday September 1st  

All double-handed boats participating in the race on the 238 course must be out of the harbor no later than 15.15.  

6.2 Dock Out double- and singlehand 158 September September 1st 

Single- and doublehanded participants on the 158 nm course dock out no later than 18.15 

6.3 Dock Out 2Star and singlehand 70 2nd of September  

All participants on the 70 NM course must be out of the harbor no later than 17.15

Friday the 2nd of September 2022. 2Star and Singlehand 70 NM. First start 18.00

17.55 - Warning signal: Display of pennant 1 is hoisted accompanied by 1 sound signal 

17.56 - Ready signal: Signal flag P is hoisted accompanied by 1 sound signal 

17.59 – One minute signal: Signal flag P is lowered accompanied by 1 sound signal 

18.00 – Start signal: Pennant 1 is lowered accompanied by 1 sound signal 

 

7.5 Startprocedure 2Star 70 

1st start: All boats: Keelboats Mini, Small, Medium, Large, XL Multihull Small and Large 

18.15 - Warning signal: Pennant 2 is hoisted accompanied by 1 sound signal 

18.16 - Ready signal: Signal flag P is hoisted accompanied by 1 sound signal 

18.19 – One minute signal: Signal flag P is lowered accompanied by 1 sound signal 

18.20 – Start signal: Pennant 2 is lowered accompanied by 1 sound signal 

 

8. POSTPONEMENT 

The Race Committee can postpone the start. The signal flag AP (the answering pennant) is hoisted along with 2 sound signals. The postponement will be announced via VHF channel 72 if possible before the planned Dock Out. 

 

Postponement stops: When AP is lowered along with the sound signal, the warning signal will be given 5 minutes later. The postponement stops, and is announced via VHF channel 72. When the postponement is stopped the start procedure will be carried out as described SI point 7. 

 

9. JUMPSTART 

There will be no recalls. If any part of the hull, crew or equipment of a boat is on the course side of the starting line there will be given a time penalty of 30 minutes. No restart possible. 

 

10. TIME LIMIT 

The time limit for completing the race is Saturday the 3th of September 2022 at 17.00. 

 

11. PROTESTS 

Protests between the boats and protests concerning the breach of the statutes of Vegvisir Race and the present Sailing Guidelines must be notified as described as in World Sailing Racing Rules rule no. 61. 

A Vegvisir Race protest form is available at the bureau in the Race Center and must be returned at the same place no later than 1 hour after completion of the race. 

All protesting boats must immediately after the incidence that triggered the protest fly signal flag B clearly visible.  

A protest hearing will take place at the race office and a result will be found before the prize giving ceremony. The result of the protest hearing will be announced on the official Notice Board. The result of the protest stands and cannot be appealed to any administrative authority. 

 

12. SAFETY 

When checking in and receiving the tracing unit and start numbers the participant declares with his/her signature that the boat’s safety equipment and navigation lights comply with the requirements described in the statutes for the race and in the COLREGS. All participating skippers must state the phone number to their relatives and the Race Committee when getting the material for the race.  

All participating boats must be available for safety check in Nyborg.  

Race management carries out safety checks on selected boats at the following times.

Wednesday 31st of August from 15.00 to 20.00 

Thursday the 1st of September 2022 from 09.00 to 12.00 

Friday the 2nd of September 2022 from 09.00 to 12.00

13. WITHDRAWAL 

A skipper that withdraws from the race or in any other way suspends racing, is obliged to state this to the Race Committee on phone number: +45 2360 1667 as soon as possible. 

When staying more than 6 hours in the harbor the boat is considered to have withdrawn from the race. It is not permitted to receive assistance during stays in the harbor. 

 

14. AWARDS 

There are awards for the winners in all races on the three courses. 

 

15. AWARD CEREMONY 

The award ceremony takes place Saturday evening on the 3rd of September 2022 from 19.00. Any changes to the planned award show will be announced on the Notice Board in the Race Center and announced on VHF channel 72. 

16. DISCLAIMER 

The participant confirms by his/her signature at the registration that the participation in the race is fully at his/her own risk. Vegvisir Race does not take any responsibility for damage to materials, personal injury or death, which happens in connection of the race. 

 

17. INSURANCE 

Each participating boat must have a valid liability insurance. Documentation for valid insurance must be presented at the registration
