Vegvisir Race Nyborg 2027 - 10 years anniversary edition on the horizon!
This is Vegvisir Race
Vegvisir Race is a challenging annual shorthanded sailing event. Founded in 2017 the first editions of the race took place in Nykøbing Falster. Since 2021, the venue has been the town of Nyborg, located in the heart of Denmark. Each year, the race features new courses that explore the waters connecting Denmark, Germany, and Sweden.
The event tests participants' skills, physical fitness, endurance, and tactical abilities. Reaching the finish line is a significant achievement, as skippers face extreme demands on their navigation, meteorology, tactical, and strategic expertise.
Strategy and Tactics Are Essential
The Vegvisir Race courses combine tight inshore sailing with potentially rough coastal racing. Participants must adapt to frequent changes and "gear shifts" as the course alternates between inshore and offshore-like conditions.
A successful Vegvisir Racer must develop a clear strategy and tactics before the start. Route planning must consider the evolving weather, currents, waves, and winds over the race's 30 to 50 hours.
What Is a Vegvisir?
A Vegvisir is an Icelandic magical symbol believed to help people find their way. According to myth, anyone bearing this symbol will never get lost, even in storms or bad weather, and will always navigate through the unknown.
The Vegvisir serves as both a literal and figurative compass. In mythology, it aids people in finding their way at sea and serves as a guiding symbol for personal journeys in life.
Collaboration
The Vegvisir Race is made possible through a collaboration between the event and communication agency Shorthand ECM, the Municipality of Nyborg, and Nyborg Sejlforening.
